I have seen it used 2 ways. On 60 minutes they showed the therapist moving her finger quickly back and forth while the client goes back into the traumatic memory. The client needs to know that they can come back into present time if it gets too scary.
The other way was used by my former therapist. She would have me bring up a traumatic memory, rate its severity from 0-10, then she would have me run through the memory while she lightly tapped by knees back and forth. After she got a sense that I was processing the memory for awhile, she would have me come back to the present and gauge where I was on the 0-10 scale.
EMDR is an acronym for a new psychotherapeutic technique called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
ReplyDeleteIt was first developed to help Viet Nam vets who had long term PTSD that nothing else helped.

I found it very helpful.
I thought this would be interesting to practice. Tim
